Steady Use Rate (formerly the 'Select Pricing Plan')

If you use a heat pump to heat and cool your home, you could benefit from the Steady Use Rate (formerly known as the 'Select Pricing Plan') and can take advantage of the one-year price guarantee. If you participate in the SmartCharge New York program for EV drivers, you will be unenrolled automatically from SmartCharge New York if you enroll in the Steady Use Rate.

If you have solar or net metering, you are likely not a good fit for the Steady Use Rate. The Standard Rate or Time of Use Rate may be better for you.

Your bill is made up of three kinds of charges: the supply and delivery of the power you use, and taxes.

Delivery and Taxes:

The cost to build, maintain, and operate infrastructure that delivers energy safely and reliably to you—plus local property taxes on this infrastructure.

The Standard Rate charges based on your total electricity used (in kilowatt-hours), whereas the Steady Use Rate charges you based on your three highest electricity usage levels during peak and off-peak periods each billing cycle.

Peak hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on weekdays, except holidays.

Under the Steady Use Rate, Con Edison tracks your highest 60-minute electricity use during peak and off-peak hours each day. At the end of the billing cycle, we average your three highest 60-minute periods and apply the rates above.

Supply

 The cost of the energy we purchase on your behalf in competitive markets. Costs vary based on the weather, demand, and market prices. We do not produce energy and don't make a profit on the supply charge you see on your bill.

On the Steady Use Rate, you’ll keep paying supply charges in cents per kWh, just as you did on your prior rate, but you’ll be charged a higher price during peak hours (noon to 8 p.m.) and a lower price during off-peak hours.

If you purchase your supply from an Energy Services Company (ESCO), you will continue to be billed at the price that you and your ESCO agreed upon. Peak and off-peak pricing will not apply.

Log into your account and locate the “Market Rate" tile. If it says “Rate: EL1 Residential or Religious,” you’re on our Standard Electric Rate.

All residential customers are automatically enrolled on our Standard Electric Rate when they set up their account, so unless you enrolled in another optional rate at some point, you’ll still be on the Standard Electric Rate.

If you have a heat pump and are new to the plan, you’re eligible for the 12-month price guarantee. After 12 months, we’ll compare how much you paid on the Steady Use Rate with what you would have spent had you stayed on the Standard Electric Rate. If you paid more on the Steady Use Rate, you’ll receive a credit for that amount on your next bill.

 The Steady Use Rate rewards you for spreading your usage out more evenly throughout the day, and using energy in off-peak times. You can reduce bills by staggering when you use large appliances and use them in off-peak hours, or outside of the noon to 8:00pm period.
