What neighborhoods will the new substation serve?

The upgraded substation will primarily serve Central Brooklyn, specifically the Canarsie and Remsen Village areas.

Will there be any long-term effects to the community, specifically Railroad Playground across the street?

We're committed to minimizing long-term impacts to the community and do not anticipate changes to the size of the playground. During construction, there may be some temporary traffic changes.

Where will the clean energy that powers this project come from?

The Gateway Park substation will receive power via underground transmission lines through the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub. The Hub will serve as a vital interconnection point for offshore wind power generated by turbines in the New York Bight, about 150 miles off the coast of Long Island and New Jersey.

The Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub is a transformative, $810 million new substation in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, that has the potential to connect up to 4,500 megawatts of offshore wind power. It is a critical part of our commitment to build a resilient electric grid in support of New York State’s and New York City’s climate goals.

How was this area chosen? Who approved the process?

We selected this location to support the growing electricity needs of the Canarsie and Remsen Village areas. In New York City, substations must be in manufacturing zones. Our real estate team studied possible locations based on the defined area, required zoning, and minimum lot size. The Public Service Commission approved the final choice.

Are only transmission lines involved?

No. The project includes transmission lines (bringing power from the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub to the substation) and distribution lines (delivering power to homes and businesses).

What is the construction timeline?

Construction will last from June 2026 through May 2028. We will provide regular updates on the construction schedule and promptly notify the community of any changes.

Who will manage traffic during construction?

Our contractor, Gianfia, will manage traffic flow during construction. Their plan has been reviewed and approved by city agencies and Con Edison.

When are the construction hours?

Standard working hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. We may extend work hours based on project needs.

What agencies are involved?

The Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Transportation, Department of Buildings, and Long Island Rail Road are involved in the project. We also work with other agencies as needed to obtain the necessary permits and approvals.
