Gateway Park Substation
This critical investment will connect to the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub and is part of our plan to support growing energy demand and deliver reliable, resilient, and cleaner energy to Central Brooklyn.

About Gateway Substation
We are building Brooklyn’s energy grid of the future, today. We recently began construction on the Gateway Park Substation in Canarsie, Brooklyn, which is a critical component of our plan to deliver cleaner, resilient, year-round, reliable energy to Brooklyn residents and businesses.
As part of that mission, the newly constructed indoor Gateway Park Substation will strengthen the network’s resiliency and expand transmission capacity to better serve the neighborhoods of Central Brooklyn. The project also includes building out 7.5 miles of underground feeders that will allow power to flow from the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub (in Vinegar Hill) into the new substation.
Why It is Needed
The Gateway Park Substation and feeders will add capacity, prevent overloads, and strengthen network resiliency. This is needed to address the area’s growing energy demand from:
- Economic Growth
- New Housing
- Electric Heating
- Electric Vehicle Charging
Without upgrades, the existing system could become overloaded, reducing reliability for customers.

Live Near the Project? Here’s What You Can Expect
As we move forward with construction, we will uphold our values of operational excellence and being good stewards of the community. Construction of the substation is estimated to start in June 2026 and continue through May 2028.
During this time, you might notice:
- Construction noise from jackhammering, digging, and other work
- Temporary relocation of bike and bus lanes, as well as traffic detours
- Temporary loss of parking spots
We’ll work as safely and efficiently as possible to minimize disruptions. Look for a flyer in your mailbox to learn how construction may affect you or your business. You may also receive emails and/or texts based on your notification preferences.

Powering Progress in Brooklyn
The new substation and feeders:
- Will enable us to continue delivering reliable energy while supporting the continued growth in Central Brooklyn.
- Coincide with new transmission lines, substations, and other planned investments that will add resiliency and maintain reliability in Brooklyn’s energy grid.
The project will also have economic benefits by adding high-quality union jobs both during construction and long-term to run and maintain the site.
