St. John's is Electrifiying!
In Carnesecca Arena and On Campus Decarbonization is Game On
When St. John’s University Division I athletes hit the showers in Carnesecca Arena this spring, their water will be heated by three newly installed air-source heat pumps – making it the “cleanest” hot water around.
Rather than using fossil fuels to heat the arena’s water, the University installed heat pumps that use the power of the ambient temperature of the building’s lower level. The project is expected to reduce the use of natural gas in the facility.
More than 21,300 full- and part-time students thrive and succeed because the University promotes academic enrichment and a supportive climate. And concern for the global climate is another reason why St. John’s is reducing its carbon footprint and energy use.
“We're electrifying and reducing the use of fossil fuel on this campus,” said Thomas Goldsmith, St. John’s University director of energy and environmental conservation. “We’ve brought together a power team from Con Edison, the city and state to identify the most efficient projects at the best cost with the greatest decarbonization. We’re bringing that power team to the table to make the best energy decisions for the benefit of our students, the University and the environment.”
The university has also recently completed multiple energy efficiency projects, for which they received over $1 million in incentives. The projects included pipe insulation, boiler replacements, and steam trap retrofits that have saved over 400,000 therms and 300,000 kilowatt hours annually.
“We are pleased to contribute to St. John’s energy efficiency initiatives.” said Alyki Malliaros, program manager. “Con Edison’s Large Commercial and Industrial Programs help our commercial and industrial customers identify and install the energy efficiency upgrades best for them, while also helping to reduce the cost of upgrades or retrofits. We are here to support customers to help them meet New York City and New York State clean energy goals.”
In the past three years, Con Edison has paid $83 million in cash incentives to commercial and industrial customers, saving over 250 million kWh and five million therms annually – reducing their carbon footprint by over 200,000 metric tons.
