Gas Service Line Inspections: Frequently Asked Questions

New York State gas safety law requires us to perform an inspection of our gas service line and meter(s) supplying your building. This FAQ page provides important details regarding the Service Line Inspection program.

Yes, New York State law requires these inspections. The frequency of this recurring inspection depends on your property type; for example, if the gas equipment is for a residential or commercial building.

We must have access to your home or business to complete the inspection and will make multiple attempts to perform it. If a technician from Con Edison or one of our approved contractors cannot perform the inspection, they’ll leave a card with instructions for how to schedule an appointment.

Because this inspection is required by law if we cannot inspect our equipment, you may be charged a monthly no-access fee of up to $500 per meter to your account. Your gas service may also be turned off until we can complete the inspection.

A Con Edison technician or qualified contractor from Alisto, Reconn Utility Services, Storti Quality Services, Precision Pipeline Solutions, or Southern Cross will perform the inspection.

If someone arrives on your property unexpectedly for a gas inspection, you can always ask to see their photo ID and call us to confirm their identity at 1-800-75 CONED (1-800-752-6633).Keep others safe. No, we do not charge a fee for the inspection. But if we cannot complete the inspection after multiple tries, you may be charged up to $500 per meter per month until we can complete the work.
The inspection includes a gas leakage survey and a visual inspection for atmospheric corrosion, such as rust, on all exposed piping to the outlet of the gas meter inside your home or building.
The inspector will notify Con Edison immediately if they identify any issues and a crew will be sent to your address to make the situation safe. Our inspectors will also report any other problems to Con Edison and we will follow up with you with any instructions and safety precautions.
If you believe your inspection has already been completed, please email us a photo of your gas meter that clearly shows the meter number and inspection sticker. We will check it, update your account if necessary, and get back to you as soon as possible.
Please reach out to us with your service address and the appropriate person’s name and contact information. We’ll schedule the appointment with them. You can either email us or call 1-800-643-1289 (press 3), Monday to Friday, between 7.a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Please email us to explain the situation. Include your account number, service address, and the account holder’s name.  Our customer service representatives will review your case and issue a refund if necessary.

If a gas meter is located inside your home or building—yes, the inspector will need to go inside to perform the inspection.
About 15 minutes. If we find a problem, we will remain on your premises until we're able to make the situation safe.

You’ll receive a letter ahead of time from Con Edison with instructions for scheduling your gas inspection. If you do not book an appointment, expect an unscheduled visit from a Con Edison technician or a qualified contractor from Alisto, Reconn Utility Services, or Storti Quality Services.

Starting January 1, 2020, gas piping in buildings with 3 or more families or commercial buildings must be inspected by a Licensed Master Plumber or qualified individual at least once every four years. All exposed gas lines must be inspected and a report filed with the NYC Department of Buildings. This inspect must be performed in addition to the inspection by Con Edison.
