Smart Energy FAQ
The Smart Energy Plan is a billing option that helps you reduce energy costs by basing delivery charges on your highest electricity use during hourly periods. Each month, your three highest 60‑minute usage periods during both peak and off‑peak hours determine your delivery charges.
- Only your delivery charges change with the Smart Energy Plan. Supply charges stay the same whether you receive your energy from Con Edison or an Energy Service Company (ESCO). Delivery charges are based on your highest hourly energy use (measured in kilowatts. Your smart meter records your daily maximum demand during peak and off‑peak hours. Then, your top three peak and off‑peak demands in your billing cycle are averaged to determine your delivery charges.
The plan is open to all residential, religious, and small commercial customers with a smart meter and working communication equipment.

On average, residential customers use about 2.3 kW during peak hours and 2.5 kW during off‑peak hours. Running several large appliances (washers, dryers, space heaters) at once can raise your usage.
Peak hours are when delivery charges are higher.
Off‑peak hours include nights, weekends, and holidays, when delivery charges are lower.
