Gas Service Line Inspections
New York State law requires us to inspect the gas service lines and meters supplying buildings in our service territory.
Inspections Keep Communities Safe
We need to inspect the meters and gas pipes that supply natural gas to the buildings in our service area. These inspections are required by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC)* to protect your home and local community from the dangers of undetected natural gas leaks.
Because this inspection is required by law, if we cannot inspect our equipment, you may be charged a monthly no-access fee of up to $500 per meter to your account. Your gas service may also be turned off until we can complete the inspection.
Inspection Overview
The inspection includes a gas leakage survey and a visual inspection for atmospheric corrosion, such as rust, on all exposed piping to the outlet of the gas meter inside your home or building.
The frequency of this recurring inspection depends on your property type; for example, if the gas equipment is for a residential or commercial building.
If an inspection is needed, you’ll receive a letter asking you to schedule an appointment. If you do not book an appointment, expect an unscheduled visit from a Con Edison technician or a qualified contractor from Alisto, Reconn Utility Services, Storti Quality Services, Precision Pipeline Solutions, or Southern Cross.
If someone arrives on your property unexpectedly for a gas inspection, you can always ask to see their photo ID and call us to confirm their identity at 1-800-75 CONED (1-800-752-6633).
