About Gateway Substation
We are building Brooklyn’s energy grid of the future, today. We recently began construction on the Gateway Park Substation in Canarsie, Brooklyn, which is a critical component of our plan to deliver cleaner, resilient year-round, reliable energy to Brooklyn residents and businesses.
As part of that mission, the newly constructed indoor Gateway Park Substation will strengthen the network’s resiliency and expand transmission capacity to better serve the neighborhoods of Central Brooklyn. The project also includes building out 7.5 miles of underground feeders that will allow for power to flow from the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub (in Vinegar Hill) into the new substation.
Why It is Needed
The Gateway Park Substation and feeders will add capacity, prevent overloads, and strengthen network resiliency. This is needed to address the area’s growing energy demand from:
- Economic Growth
- New Housing
- Electric Heating
- Electric Vehicle Charging
Without upgrades, the existing system could become overloaded, reducing reliability for customers.

As we move forward with construction, we will uphold our values for operational excellence and being good stewards of the community. Construction will last from June 2026 through May 2028.
During this time, you might notice:
- Construction noise from jackhammering, digging, and other work
- Temporary relocation of bike and bus lanes, as well as traffic detours
- Temporary loss of parking spots
