Special Protections During Cold or Hot Weather

When the forecast calls for extreme cold or heat, we will not disconnect residential customers’ service. Learn about your protections during a weather event.

Cold-Weather Protections

We will not disconnect residential customers on days when the Central Park high temperature, factoring in wind chill, is forecasted to be 32° F or lower.

Between November 1 and April 15, we will not disconnect service of customers enrolled in the CONCERN program – in which all members of the household are 62 or older, 18 or younger, or permanently disabled.

If you qualify for these protections, it’s important to let us know. Sign up through My Account or call 1-800-404-9097, weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During this period, income-eligible customers whose heat and/or power had previously been disconnected can use a Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) payment to restore their service. Additionally, if a customer requests a payment agreement, we’ll use their HEAP payment as the down payment.

Hot-Weather Protections

We will not disconnect service to residential customers for non-payment the day of or day before the heat index is forecast to reach, or reaches, 90° F or higher at Central Park, La Guardia Airport, or JFK Airport. If the heat index exceeds 90° F, we’ll also suspend disconnections over the next two consecutive days.

Currently Without Service?

Customers whose electric or gas service was previously disconnected due to non-payment can seek assistance by calling us at 1-800-75-CONED.
