Solar panels on a rooftop.

Understanding Solar Energy

Solar panels harness the sun's energy and use it to generate electricity.

Residential Solar Installation

The 4 components of a residential solar installation: solar panels, inverter, meter, and customer supply panel.
  • Solar Panels

Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) energy.

  • Inverter

The inverter converts the direct current power generated by the solar panels into the alternating current power used in homes and businesses.

  • Meter

The meter connects your home or business to our distribution system and lets us see how much energy you use. When your solar panels generate more energy than you need, your meter will run backward. You can sell this extra power back to Con Edison, earning private solar generation credits.

  • Customer Supply Panel

The electricity generated by your solar panels travels through the supply panel to provide power to your lights and appliances. The supply panel is connected to your Con Edison meter.
