Electric Vehicle Charging Rewards FAQ

If you own or lease a plug-in hybrid electric or battery-electric vehicle and charge it within Con Edison’s service area in New York City and Westchester County*, you are eligible to participate. You are not required to be a Con Edison customer.

*You will not earn rewards for charging in the following Queens and Westchester County ZIP Codes, which are outside Con Edison’s service area: 10501, 10505, 10518, 10519, 10521, 10526, 10527, 10535, 10536, 10590, 10540, 10560, 10576, 10578, 10576, 10587, 10589, 10590, 10597, 11690, 11691, 11692, 11694, 11695, 11696, and 11697.

Alternative payment options are available for commercial fleet vehicles. Rewards are not paid out as a credit on your electric bill.
You will be invited by our program partner, Geotab, to create a SmartCharge Rewards account and connect your vehicle’s on-board telematics. Some vehicle models require the installation of a free device to connect. If your vehicle requires a device, Geotab will mail you a device. Simply plug the device into your vehicle’s on-board diagnostics (OBD II) port. If you are already using the OBD II port for another device, you may request a free y-cable which will allow you to use both devices at the same time. Device Installation Instructions

To determine the rewards that you are eligible to earn, the device collects the following information from your vehicle:

  • when you charge
  • how much you charge (kWh)
  • the location (GPS) of your charging

Driving data is also collected and may be used to calculate fuel efficiency (MPGeq), driving efficiency (watt hours per mile), and greenhouse gas emissions and savings. Only charging GPS information is shared, not driving GPS information. The charging GPS information will be used for the purposes of running this program. Any personally identifiable information will not be made public or shared with any other organizations. Read our Privacy Policy to learn more.

Log in to the SmartCharge Rewards portal to see:

  • Charging energy consumption – Kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed by time of day
  • Total rewards earned each month

Depending on how your vehicle is connected (on-board telematics versus device), you may see:

  • Battery State of Charge (SOC) – Starting and ending SOC percentage each trip (loadable in trip logs)
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Per-mile greenhouse gas emissions from driving as well as emissions savings compared to an average gasoline vehicle
  • Fuel Consumption – Total liquid fuel usage for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle owners (downloadable in trip logs)
  • Electric Energy Fraction – Percentage of electric energy (kwh) for your plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (downloadable in trip logs)
  • Electric Distance Fraction – Percentage of miles driven on electric power from your plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (downloadable in trip logs)
  • Driving Efficiency – Accumulative and per-trip MPGe and watt hours per mile
  • Outside Temperature and Auxiliary Loads – Measured impact of temperature and AC/heating on your electric range (downloadable in trip logs)
  • Battery Health – A quantifiable score indicating your electric vehicle’s battery degradation with respect to storage and power capacity. See the Frequently Asked Questions on Battery Health for a more detailed explanation.
Charging your vehicle at off-peak times reduces stress to the energy grid, which helps ensure more reliable service to everyone.
