Electric Vehicle Charging Rewards FAQ

If you own or lease a plug-in hybrid electric or battery-electric vehicle and charge it within Con Edison’s service area in New York City and Westchester County*, you are eligible to participate. You are not required to be a Con Edison customer.

*You will not earn rewards for charging in the following Queens and Westchester County ZIP Codes, which are outside Con Edison’s service area: 10501, 10505, 10518, 10519, 10521, 10526, 10527, 10535, 10536, 10590, 10540, 10560, 10576, 10578, 10576, 10587, 10589, 10590, 10597, 11690, 11691, 11692, 11694, 11695, 11696, and 11697.

You will receive a free, cellular-enabled, connected car device that gives you access to valuable charging and driving data through the SmartCharge Rewards portal.

As a program participant, you will begin earning rewards the first time you charge your vehicle in the Con Edison service area—with a $150 enrollment bonus. Then continue earning rewards throughout the year by charging at off-peak times.

SmartCharge New York Program Rewards

  • $5 Monthly Reward:  Earned for charging within the Con Edison service area
  • 10 cents per kWh Off-Peak Charging Reward:  Earned for charging between 12 midnight and 8 a.m., year-round
  • $20 per month Summer Peak Reward:  Earned for avoiding charging weekdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., June 1 through September 30
  • $25 Refer A Friend Reward:  Earned by sharing your unique referral code with a friend who enrolls in SmartCharge New York
For Residential Time-of-Use Rate customers (excluding those on the one-year price guarantee), the following alternative reward amounts apply:
  • $5 Monthly Reward:  Earned for charging within the Con Edison service area
  • 1.7 cents per kWh Off-Peak Charging Reward:  Earned for charging between 12 midnight and 8 a.m., year-round
  • $20 per month Summer Peak Reward:  Earned for avoiding charging weekdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., June 1 through September 30
  • $10 per month Non-Summer Peak Reward: Earned for avoiding charging weekdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., October 1 through May 31)
  • $25 Refer A Friend Reward:  Earned by sharing your unique referral code with a friend who enrolls in SmartCharge New York
Use our Rewards Calculator to learn how much you can earn. The rewards earned are dependent on your charging behavior and vehicle’s battery size. You can view your earned rewards in the SmartCharge Rewards portal.
Rewards are delivered monthly to your PayPal account the month following when the rewards are earned, or you may opt to receive an annual Amazon promo code in March for rewards earned in the previous year. Alternative payment options are available for commercial fleet vehicles. Rewards are not paid out as a credit on your electric bill.

Simply plug the connected car device into your vehicle’s on-board diagnostics (OBD II) port. We provide Tesla owners an adapter cable to plug the device into the Tesla diagnostics connector. If you are already using the OBD II port for another device, you may request a free y-cable which will allow you to use both devices at the same time.

Device Installation Instructions

 

To determine the rewards that you are eligible to earn, the device collects the following information from your vehicle:

  • when you charge
  • how much you charge (kWh)
  • the location (GPS) of your charging

Driving data is used to calculate fuel efficiency (MPGeq), driving efficiency (watt hours per mile), and greenhouse gas emissions and savings. GPS information is only read when charging, not when driving. This information will be used only by Con Edison and our vendor FleetCarma for the purposes of running this program. Any personally identifiable information will not be made public or shared with any other organizations. Read our Privacy Policy to learn more.

Log in to the SmartCharge Rewards portal to see:

  • Charging energy consumption (kWh) in and outside Con Edison’s service area
  • Fuel efficiency and electric driving efficiency (MPGeq and watt hours per mile)
  • Battery health score
  • Vehicle greenhouse gas emissions and savings (grams per mile and pounds of C02 equivalents)
  • SmartCharge Rewards™ earned each month
  • Trip data, available for you to download
