Con Edison Fights Food Insecurity with Holidays Approaching
Company has given more than half a million dollars this year to help stem rising tide of food insecurity worsened by pandemic
With the holidays approaching and the weather turning cold, Con Edison employees are volunteering at food distribution sites across New York City, adding friendly faces to the $600,000 the company has given to nonprofit organizations this year to combat food insecurity.
“Con Edison has a long tradition of supporting underserved communities in New York City and Westchester County,” said Frances A. Resheske, Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Con Edison. “We are proud of our employees who give their time to fight hunger as the city and nation continue to build back from the pandemic.”
Con Edison employees have helped stock food stations and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce in Brooklyn and the Bronx in recent weeks, and will participate in another distribution event in Staten Island in December. The mobile markets are run by City Harvest, and the food is given to needy New Yorkers free of charge
In 2021, Con Edison has financially supported more than 30 nonprofit organizations that provide food to those in need in their communities. Among them is The Bowery Mission, which is gearing up for its annual Thanksgiving Celebration, when 1,000 Thanksgiving meals will be served.
Food insecurity has risen sharply in New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly among children. An estimated 1.5 million New Yorkers experience food insecurity, including one in four children in the city, according to City Harvest.
Other nonprofit organizations supported by Con Edison include: Food Bank for New York City, Feeding Westchester, God’s Love We Deliver, Citymeals on Wheels, St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, African Refuge, Asian Americans for Equality, Bk Rot, Fordham University, GrowNYC, H.E.A.L.T.H. for Youths, Hamilton-Madison House, Hot Bread Kitchen, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, Mayors Fund to Advance New York City, New York Common Pantry, Part of the Solution, Project Hospitality, Red Hook Initiative, Resource Center for Community Development, Rethink Food NYC, Rev. Linnette C. Williamson Memorial Park Association, Services & Advocacy for Gay Lesbian Bisexual & Transgender Elders, Services for the Underserved, Campaign Against Hunger, UA3, USO of Metropolitan New York, West Side Center for Community Life, and World Central Kitchen.
