Con Edison Engineer From Clifton, N.J. Wins Con Edison’s Highest Honor

Nathanael Gay Earns Prestigious Award For His Leadership at Work and His Community Service

A Con Edison engineer from Clifton, N.J. has won the company’s highest honor for his contributions to public safety, his integrity and community service.

Nathanael Gay, section manager in Brooklyn-Queens Electric Operations, is a winner of the Living Our Values Award, which is for high-achieving employees who demonstrate stellar character on and off the job.

“I’ve tried hard to make a meaningful, lasting difference for our customers and my teammates each and every day,” Gay said. “I constantly remind myself and others that safety is  a way of life, not a slogan.”

“Nate’s passion for safety comes from his genuine concern for our employees, their families and the public,” said James Brennan, Con Edison’s general manager for Brooklyn-Queens Electric Operations. “He has demonstrated a relentless focus on safety throughout his career by incorporating safety into his designs as an engineer, ensuring safety was a priority when managing projects and in leading his team in Electric Operations.”

Gay’s focus goes beyond safety for his co-workers. It also includes improving the reliability of the electrical grid for the company’s customers.

In 2016, Gay led an effort to reduce outage durations for the critical equipment that carries power to the company’s 3.5 million customers.

In partnership with a vendor, he developed a device and built an algorithm to help field workers more quickly identify equipment that failed and needed repair. That allows the crews to start repairs sooner and increase the reliability of Con Edison service.

Gay also makes an impact as co-chair of the LGBTQ+ Pride Employee Resource Group. He helped build a support system for his LGBTQ+ teammates and led efforts to make Pride Month a learning experience for his colleagues. He has fostered a level of understanding within the company for this community that transcends the work environment.

Outside of work, he serves as a big brother for the Big Brother/Big Sister Program supporting youth development, as well as a mentor for LGBTQ+ minors through the Hetrick-Martin Institute.

Gay is a graduate of University of Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in business administration from Rutgers University.
