Long Island Resident Daniel Tenney Receives Con Edison's Highest Award

Sayville Man Contributes to Gas Safety and Reliability

Daniel Tenney, a senior designer in Gas Engineering Maps & Records, has received the Con Edison’s Living Our Values (LOV) Award for his work to keep service safe and reliable, serve customers, and his commitment to his community.

Tenney has raised the bar for documenting changes in the vast underground infrastructure that serves Con Edison’s 1.1 million natural gas customers by combining his lifelong love of maps and technology with his ability to build strong working relationships.

“By visiting project sites and seeing what our customers and crews in the field see, we can virtually develop maps in real time,” said Tenney. “That helps keep projects on schedule, but more importantly it results in detailed and precise representations of underground infrastructure which improves safety. And safety is Con Edison’s top priority.”

Tenney has improved the pace, efficiency and accuracy of his work by organizing meetings with construction teams; translating “engineering-speak” into “construction-speak” to better communicate what is required; consulting archive folders; and conducting frequent site visits.

Since he joined the company in 2011, thousands of large buildings in the area have switched from oil to natural gas, which is cleaner and less expensive. Tenney’s proactive approach kept Manhattan’s mapping projects moving through the recent construction boom.

Tenney is a 2020 LOV winner. The company held off last year on announcing its annual winners because the Covid-19 pandemic prevented it from holding a traditional dinner and ceremony. The company is honoring its 2020 and 2021 winners at a virtual ceremony last week.

“Dan’s seamless collaboration with co-workers makes complex and intricate projects a success,” said James J. Melachrinos, Gas Engineering supervisor. Dan’s warmth and easy–going, can-do disposition eases the path forward. The whole team benefits from Dan’s involvement.”

Tenney carefully documents changes to Manhattan’s gas infrastructure, some of which dates back more than a century. He has a deep appreciation for the historic buildings in Manhattan.

Tenney shares his insights with fellow designers, engineers, field workers, supervisors and managers. He is known for his sincerity. His desire for quality work is unparalleled, while his humble demeanor, deep knowledge, and quest for precision make him a standard-bearer of excellence.

When not working, Tenney volunteers at the West Sayville Fire Department along with his dad and brother. He serves as the Sergeant of Arms for the department and is also a delegate to the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen. He is a longstanding member of the Flying Dutchmen Drill Team.

He holds an associate’s degree in electrical technology from Suffolk County Community College and a bachelor’s in organizational leadership from Manhattan College.

Tenney and his wife, Alyssa, live in Sayville with their son, William.
