Con Edison Asks Customers in Sunnyside, Woodside Areas of Queens to Conserve Energy

Company Reduces Voltage by 8 Percent to Maintain Reliability

Con Edison is asking customers in the Sunnyside and Woodside areas of Queens to conserve energy while crews repair equipment. Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent to the area while repairs are made.


The conservation appeal covers an area bounded by the Sunnyside Railroad Yards and Northern Boulevard on the north, 58th Street on the east, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the south, and 33rd Street on the west. It includes the neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Sunnyside Gardens, and Woodside. The area has about 36,000 customers.


Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, microwaves and, if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, until the equipment problems are resolved.


The voltage reduction also covers a second area, but the company is not asking for customers to take special conservation steps. That area is bounded by Queens Plaza North on the north, 33rd Street on the east, Newtown Creek on the south, and the East River on the west.


Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at, or with our mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power. 


Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

The equipment problems in these neighborhoods have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system.


Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants.  The company is in constant communication with the New York City Office of Emergency Management.
