Con Edison Earns 2018 ReliabilityOne Award for Outstanding Service in the Northeast Region
Con Edison has been recognized by PA Consulting as the recipient of the 2018 ReliabilityOne Award for Outstanding Reliability Performance in the Northeast Region.
Con Edison, which serves 3.4 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y., accepted the award at a ceremony held last night in Scottsdale, Ariz.
“Con Edison operates in the world’s financial capital in a dense urban environment, so maintaining reliability at the highest level is a paramount concern,” said William Washington, Con Edison’s general manager of Brooklyn-Queens Electric Operations. “Receiving this award is an affirmation of the hard work, day and night, of the women and men who address any and every situation to keep our system running smoothly.”
Con Edison has prevented hundreds of thousands of outages with its four-year, $1 billion “Fortifying the Future” investment. Under that program, which began after Superstorm Sandy struck in October 2012, the company installed smart switches, submersible equipment, stronger poles and wiring and made other upgrades to protect its equipment against severe weather.
The company is also installing nearly 5 million smart meters for its electric and gas customers. The meters notify Con Edison when a customer is out of power.
All large utilities operating electric delivery networks in North America are eligible for consideration for the ReliabilityOne Award. There are seven regional awards, including Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Plains, Mountains, West, and Southeast. The selection of provisional recipients is based primarily on statistics that measure the frequency and duration of customer outages.
After provisional recipients are selected, each company undergoes an on-site certification process, which provides an independent review and confirmation of the policies, processes and systems used to collect, analyze and report a company's reliability results.
“Con Edison earned this award for its continued excellent reliability to customers in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y., said Gregg Edeson, PA Consulting’s ReliabilityOne program director “The company is taking another step forward with its installation of smart meters, which will notify Con Edison when customers lose service, leading to a smoother and more efficient restoration process.”
