Join the Wholesale Market With Distributed Generation

Get paid by selling the excess power you generate, either by working with an aggregator or becoming one yourself.

Overview

The wholesale energy market is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by new regulations, advanced grid technologies, and the rise of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). These DERs include solar panels, battery storage, EV chargers, and smart appliances. This evolution is paving the way for a cleaner, more reliable, and decentralized energy system, and you can play a rewarding role in it.

What Qualifies as Distributed Generation?

You may already have a DER that qualifies. Common examples include:

  • Rooftop solar panels
  • Battery storage systems (including behind-the-meter)
  • Smart EV chargers and electric vehicles
  • Backup generators
  • Combined heat and power (CHP) systems
  • Thermal storage systems
  • Smart thermostats and energy-efficient appliances
  • Demand response and usage rewards

Who Manages It?

It's managed by the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) in coordination with Con Edison. The program supports FERC Order No. 2222, a landmark ruling that opens wholesale markets to DER aggregators.

Get Started

There are two ways to get compensated for the clean energy you generate. Choose the option that works best for your setup.

Option 1

Contact an approved aggregator

Option 2

Register and bid into the NYISO market.
Once you’ve chosen an option, you can learn more about compensation by logging into the DER Portal

Become an Aggregator

If you manage multiple Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), you can register as an aggregator to directly participate and bid into the wholesale electricity market. Aggregators play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing grid flexibility, and enabling more distributed energy to contribute to the broader power system.

Key Requirements to Become an Aggregator

  • Your aggregated DERs must total at least 100 kW in capacity
  • All DERs must be located within the same NYISO-defined Transmission Node
  • Your system must support telemetry and real-time monitoring by NYISO and Con Edison
