Be Aware of these Recent Scams
QR Code Scams
- If you participate in the SmartCharge NY program for EV drivers, please note that this program will never request your credit card information through QR code.
- The only legitimate web pages for SmartCharge NY are conEd.com/smartcharge and scny.ev.energy.
Sponsored Ad Scams
Double check your search results. Scammers have been using sponsored ads on search engines like Google to list fake bill payment information. The ads may:
- Display as a search result from Make A Bill Payment
- Include the URL makeabillpayment.com
- List the phone number 1-888-479-3560
Be cautious of unfamiliar bill payment sites and phone numbers listed outside of conEd.com.
Website Scams
- Always check the URL. Be careful using search engines and watch for fake web addresses, such as con3d.com and c0edison.com.
How to Spot Common Scams
Phone Scams
For some of the more common scams, a caller may:
- Pretend to be from Con Edison and ask for your account number. Con Edison account numbers recently changed from 15-digits to 11-digits, which may prompt scammers with an opportunity to deceive customers.
- Manipulate your caller ID to display Con Edison’s name.
- Threaten to turn off your power or gas within an hour.
- Demand immediate payment—often by prepaid card or cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin.
We do not accept payment via prepaid gift cards, cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, wire transfers, or cash apps (such as Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal), whether in person, over the phone, or by text.
Any new payment options will be announced through official Con Edison channels, along with instructions on how to use them safely and securely. If you receive a call about an outstanding payment, verify that it is legitimate before taking action.
To verify your account details, log in to conEd.com/MyAccount or call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). Secure payments can also be made through My Account or by phone.
Door-to-Door Scams
When someone comes to your door claiming to be from Con Edison, ask for credentials. It’s not rude, it’s safe. Here’s how to tell a real Con Edison employee from a fake one.
- An employee will readily prove their identity. An imposter won’t.
- An employee will wear a photo ID with their name and employee number.
- An employee will gladly give you their supervisor’s name and ask you to call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633) to verify their identity.
Email Scams
These types of emails, known as phishing, instruct customers to click on a link to pay a bill or perform another action.
- Be cautious, this could result in downloading a virus onto your computer or identity theft.
- Make sure emails are from conEd.com and don’t open suspicious links.
