Con Edison Crews Continue Restoring Service To Customers Impacted by Extreme Heat & Tonight’s Severe Thunderstorms

Con Edison Reminds Customers to Stay Safe, Report Outages

Con Edison crews have restored power to more than 93,000 customers affected by extreme weather and continue working around the clock to restore service to more than 30,700 customers impacted since the heatwave began and tonight’s severe thunderstorms.

Heat, humidity and increased demand for electricity to power air conditioners causes strain on the system. Tonight’s intense thunderstorms have knocked out power to thousands of customers across the five boroughs and Westchester County, increasing the outage counts.

As of 10 p.m., outages due to the prolonged heat and the intense storms are primarily concentrated in Staten Island, with more than 6,000 customers out of service; Queens, with more than 15,000 customers out of service; and Brooklyn, with more than 7,000 customers out of service.

The company urges customers to use energy wisely, take steps to stay safe and comfortable, and to stay away from downed wires. They may be live. For your safety, we may guard downed wires until crews make repairs. Our personnel may be in unmarked cars but will always have Con Edison identification.

Con Edison prepares for extreme heat all year long and makes robust, strategic investments in its electric delivery system to minimize customer impact. These investments are especially important as extreme weather events, like the conditions we’re experiencing now, become more frequent and severe.

Report An Outage

Con Edison may send emails and text messages to customers, reminding them to be prepared and to report an outage. Customers can sign up for text alerts at coned.com/text.

Customers can also report outages and check service restoration status at coned.com/reportoutage, with Con Edison’s mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).

Customers who report outages will receive updates from Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

Conservation Makes a Difference

During extreme and prolonged heatwaves like the one we’re experiencing now, conserving energy, especially from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., when demand is highest, helps you save money and reduce strain on the grid. These are the most effective tips to keep your costs down all summer:

  • Keep shades, blinds, and curtains closed. About 40 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows.
  • Limit air conditioner and appliance use. If you have multiple air conditioners, use only one. And if necessary, try to run just one large appliance at a time.
  • Use fans with, or instead of, an AC. Fans help cool and circulate air, so you can rely less on AC to stay comfortable.
  • Set AC to a higher temperature. Keep your AC at the highest comfortable temperature to save energy and money.
  • Turn off your AC when you’re away. Switch off your AC when you leave and set a timer to cool your home 30 minutes before you return.
  • Hold off on charging your electric vehicle. Charge your EV or plug-in hybrid after 10 p.m., unless necessary.
