Con Edison And Tech Company ‘Propel’ Helping Aid Recipients Save On Food, Energy
Con Edison and Brooklyn- based Propel are putting technology in the hands of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to help them save on two necessities: food for nourishment and energy to heat, cool and light their homes.
The companies are sharing information about Con Edison’s energy efficiency initiatives through Propel’s free Fresh EBT app. Recipients of SNAP benefits who use the app to track their balances and find discounts on food can now access information on Con Edison’s energy efficiency rebates and incentives.
“We want to help all our customers save money with our energy efficiency programs,” said Vicki Kuo, director of Energy Efficiency for Con Edison. “With our partnership with Propel, we can provide valuable information on saving energy to SNAP recipients. Even small steps, like adjusting the temperature on the AC, produce savings, and over time, those savings add up.”
“Together with Con Edison we can help more families benefit from the Fresh EBT app,” said Jimmy Chen, CEO and founder of Propel. “We give SNAP recipients the ability to save money and put more food on the table. Saving energy also enhances a family’s life because it reduces their energy bills, leaving more money for food and other expenses.”
Since Con Edison and Propel began sharing information on the SmartAC program last month, more than 500 Con Edison customers who are SNAP recipients have enrolled and applied to receive nearly 1,000 smart AC kits.
Those who install their smart AC kits on units can set the temperature in their home remotely, giving them greater control and helping them better manage their energy usage.
Fresh EBT is available for Android and the iPhone and can be downloaded from https://www.FreshEBT.com.
