Con Edison Crews Responding to Storm Outages

Public Reminded to Stay Safe & Report Outages

Con Edison crews are working to restore power to more than 14,000 customers across New York City and Westchester County who have lost service due to severe weather and high winds. Since the storm began crews have restored power to more than 10,000 customers.

Communities most impacted are Westchester County with 34 road closures and 11,200 customers without power. A significant portion of Westchester’s outages are occurring in the Town of Cortlandt, the Village of Briarcliff Manor, Town of Greenburgh, and Yorktown.

Approximately 745 customers in the Bronx located mainly in the northeast and Riverdale sections are without power. Queens is experiencing more than 1,900 outages, Staten Island has more than 116 outages and Brooklyn has 26 outages.

The storm’s powerful winds toppled trees and power lines throughout the company’s service area, causing customers to lose service. Many roads are blocked by fallen trees and inaccessible to Con Edison crews. The company must de-energize wires that are entangled in the trees before crews can cut the wires and the trees removed. Repairs are hampered by the storm’s continuing high winds.

Con Edison crews are supplemented by 90 mutual aid contractors to make repairs to storm-damaged equipment as quickly and safely as possible.

Enhanced safety protocols include the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, State, City and County guidelines for COVID-19.

We ask the public to maintain social distancing with crews responding to outages so they can focus on restoring safe, reliable service while protecting themselves, their families, and other customers.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com/reportoutage, or with our mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

Con Edison offers the following storm tips to customers to help weather the possible effects of a storm:

  • Do not go near downed wires. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with your hands of any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.
  • Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
  • If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
  • Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios or televisions are in working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries. Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.
