Con Edison Continuing Storm Outage Work; Nearly 22,000 Restored

Customers Reminded to Stay Clear of Power Lines

Con Edison crews have restored power to 22,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County impacted by today’s fierce wind and rainstorms.

As of 9 p.m. Con Edison crews were working to restore service to approximately 8,400 customers, mostly in Westchester. Today’s powerful winds knocked trees and branches onto power lines causing, customers to lose service.

In Westchester, fallen trees blocked as many as 77 roads. Con Edison has been working with cities and towns to clear those roads. Crews must de-energize wires that are entangled in the trees before they can cut the wires and have the trees removed.

The majority of the outages continue to be in Westchester County with 7,500 outages. Communities with the largest numbers of outages include Cortlandt, Peekskill, Yorktown, and Ossining.

Other areas with outages include 340 in the Bronx, 540 in Queens, 19 in Brooklyn, and 4 in Staten Island.

Con Edison crews are supplemented by 90 mutual aid contractors to make repairs to storm-damaged equipment as quickly and safely as possible.

Enhanced safety protocols include the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, State, City and County guidelines for COVID-19.

We ask the public to maintain social distancing with crews responding to outages so they can focus on restoring safe, reliable service while protecting themselves, their families, and other customers.

Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

Con Edison offers the following storm tips to customers to help weather the possible effects of a storm:

  • Do not go near downed wires. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with your hands of any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.
  • Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
  • If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
  • Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios or televisions are in working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries. Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.
