Con Edison Adding Natural Gas Service in Areas of Manhattan, Bronx, Queens

The next phase of Con Edison’s natural gas infrastructure expansion will make it easier and less costly for customers to convert from heating oil in 17 areas in Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens.

To participate in this expansion program, customers must apply by certain deadlines which vary depending on the location of their buildings. To see maps of where the expansion is taking place and for information on the program visit: or call (800) 643-1289. Additional information, such as a cost-savings calculator and answers to frequently asked questions, is also available on the website.

The company selected the areas based on existing natural gas infrastructure, building density and customer requests.

“We want to connect every customer who is interested in converting to natural gas and provide them the best cost possible,” said Nick Inga, director of the Gas Conversion Group at Con Edison. “Customers who convert will save money on their energy bills and contribute to a cleaner environment.”

Natural gas is 40 percent less expensive than heating oil and burns much cleaner. The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that natural gas will remain significantly less expensive than oil for the foreseeable future.

A New York City environmental regulation requires phasing out the use of No. 6 fuel oil by 2015 and No. 4 fuel oil by 2030.
