Far Rockaway's Mary Hendrix Receives Con Edison's Highest Honor

If you’ve ever encountered the “singing nurse” at Con Edison’s Employee Wellness Center, you probably felt a little bit better as soon as you walked in the door.

“One of my passions is music, and as the saying goes, ‘music soothes the soul’,” said Con Edison senior specialist and registered nurse Mary Hendrix.

The Far Rockaway, Queens resident is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operation of the utility’s healthcare hub at 4 Irving Place in Manhattan.

Hendrix received Con Edison’s highest employee honor, the “Living Our Values” award at a recent company ceremony. This recognition is given annually to Con Edison employees who exemplify the company’s values of service, teamwork, excellence, and concern for the quality of life in their communities.

“Mary supervises her staff and medical technicians, distributes workloads evenly among clinicians, and is always willing to ‘go above and beyond’ to help out and get a job done,” said Dr. Yolanda Hawkins, Con Edison Occupational Health supervisor. “Hendrix also reviews medical charts and ensures accurate matches between an employee’s workplace need and their medical issues,” Dr. Hawkins added. “She is an amazing leader who understands the critical importance of all levels of safety in the workplace.”

Hendrix earned an associate degree in nursing at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital School of Nursing, and completed her studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at New York University.

“One of the best parts of my job is my interactions with people,” said Hendrix, whose career spans nearly 40 years at Con Edison. “It is so rewarding to hear someone say that I made them feel better, or that my assistance was invaluable.” Her soothing singing at her desk is often complimented on by employees.

In her free time, Hendrix loves outdoor sports, the theatre, working out at her local gym and traveling. Ms. Hendrix also volunteers at St. Johns’ Hospital in Queens, where she delivers compassionate care to bed-bound patients, and volunteers to read to children at various pediatrics wards.

She supports various organizations such as the Wounded Warriors, The New York Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (NYPBA), and Women for Women, which helps unemployed women return to the work force.

Hendrix participates in several 5K walk/runs to benefit causes including breast cancer awareness and leukemia, and routinely donates blood for the New York Blood Center.

“I’m the proud mother of an amazing and talented son Devon, who also has a passion for music and helping others,” Hendrix said.

“I am deeply honored to have received this prestigious award.”
