Con Edison Celebrates First Stem Scholarship Winners
Students at 14 Local Colleges Honored for Outstanding Academics -- Students from 14 local colleges are being awarded Con Edison STEM Education Scholarships, a new scholarship and endowment program by the company to honor students with outstanding academic achievement in science, technology, engineering and math
Con Edison has pledged more than $1.5 million in academic scholarships to college students in New York City and Westchester County, awarding up to $5,000 to each recipient. The endowment itself amounts to a grant of $110,000 to each college over two academic years. Besides the individual scholarship, the gift sets aside $50,000 each year towards the endowment fund.
"We want to play a key role in educating the next great workforce, and we are now committing longstanding support for schools and students in our service area with these STEM scholarships," said Frances A. Resheske, senior vice president of Public Affairs at Con Edison. "We want to help develop young minds devoted to STEM subject areas, which offer the promise of strong job opportunity in diverse settings, and are essential to the country's competitiveness and economic growth."
The initial group of scholars was honored this week at a special ceremony at Con Edison's headquarters in Manhattan.
The Con Edison Endowment Fund will benefit the following public and private colleges. The names of the 2016 STEM scholarship winners are listed next to their college:
