Steam Decarbonization Calculator
Local Law 97
Nearly 70% of New York City’s carbon emissions come from the fossil fuels used to heat, cool, and power buildings. Local Law 97 (LL97) is part of the city’s plan to reduce these emissions and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
Our steam is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil fuels. If your large commercial or multifamily building in Manhattan currently uses gas or oil, connecting to our steam system may help you reduce your emissions.
Steam Benefits
Steam is a good choice for buildings with:
- Limited roof space
- Limited electric capacity
- Multiple tenants – no need to displace anyone to install a new system
- Special uses like humidification and sterilization
Read our Steam Decarbonization Plan to learn more about our plans to reduce emissions at our steam plants.
Steam Decarbonization Calculator
Our free, easy-to-use Excel tool helps building owners, engineers, and decision-makers compare the long-term costs and benefits of connecting to our steam system.
Enter a few details about your building and current fuel use to estimate lifetime costs, carbon emissions, and Local Law 97 information for each heating option. The results give you a side-by-side comparison of decarbonized district steam versus full electrification.
How to Get Started
A basic analysis only requires the following:
- Building Name
- Building Type (e.g., office building, elevator apartment, museum, hospital, government facility)
- Building Size (square footage)
- Building Vintage (year built)
- Current Fuel (for heat and hot water, e.g., natural gas, no. 2 fuel, district steam)
- Analysis Start Year (when the electrification or district steam solution will be fully operational)
