Con Edison Asks Customers In The Riverdale Area Of The Bronx And 1 Manhattan Neighborhood To Conserve Energy
Company Reduces Voltage by 8 Percent to Maintain Reliability
NEW YORK – Con Edison is asking customers in the northwest section of the Bronx and the Marble Hill neighborhood in northern Manhattan to conserve energy while company crews repair equipment. Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent in the area to protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are made.
The affected area is bounded by the Westchester County line on the north, the Harlem River on the south, Sedgwick Avenue and the Bronx River on the east, and the Hudson River on the south and serves 39,600 customers. It includes these Bronx neighborhoods: Riverdale, Kingsbridge and Van Cortlandt Park. The only Manhattan neighborhood affected is Marble Hill.
The equipment problems in the area have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system.
Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until crews complete repairs. The company also asks customers to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.
The company also asks that customers refrain from charging electric vehicles in these neighborhoods, except when necessary, while repairs are made.
The voltage reduction also affects other areas of northern Manhattan, though Con Edison has not issued a special call for conservation in those neighborhoods. Those boundaries are West 155th Street on the south, the Harlem River on the north and east, and the Hudson River on the west.
