Smart Home Rate Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Smart Home Rate offers eligible customers who own rooftop solar panels a free solar battery connected to smart home software, as well as a new electric rate based on real-time electricity costs.
  • We want to provide customers with a dynamic electric rate that aligns with the real-time cost of delivering electricity. We also provide a new solar battery and smart home software to help you manage your energy use and costs. The Smart Home Rate encourages you to use less electricity during certain “peak” times, like hot summer afternoons, when demand increases dramatically. Reducing your energy use during these “peak” times makes the grid run efficiently and reliably, ensuring there will be enough capacity to meet these rare spikes in electricity demand.
  • When you enroll, you’ll receive a free Sunverge One solar battery (up to $20,000 value). This battery captures power strategically from your rooftop solar system and the grid. It’s connected to smart home software that dynamically provides you with the power when it’s most valuable. That could be when your electricity rate increases, when the power goes out, or when the sun isn’t shining.

The battery fits into a rectangular cabinet that is 76 inches high, 34 inches wide, and 14 inches deep. Solar batteries are typically installed indoors in a garage or utility room, or outdoors in an area where you might install an A/C compressor.

You can get up to $60 for signing up, participating in the program, and sharing your feedback via online surveys.

  • When connected to your solar battery, the smart home software pulls data on your solar generation patterns, your home’s unique characteristics, and real-time energy costs to help you optimize your solar power.
  • The Smart Home Rate includes three components:

    • Supply Charge: Based on the total amount of electricity you use each month, billed at a new, variable price that will change over time as the supply and need for electricity in the region varies.
    • Delivery Charge: Based on your maximum demand for electricity within any given 60-minute period from noon to 8 p.m. every day. It can be higher if you use many electric appliances and your A/C at the same time.
    • Event Charge: During a peak “event,” you may pay a charge for your maximum electricity demand within any given 60-minute period.
  • On especially hot days from June through September, we will announce events—several-hour periods when we expect very high demand for electricity. There will be 10 to 12 events each year. During an event, you may pay an event charge. On the day of an event, you will receive a notification by email and/or SMS. Your solar battery and smart home software will automatically work together to help you manage energy costs. You can also manage costs by reducing or shifting electricity use to off-peak periods.
  • The price for electricity varies throughout each day. Your smart home software always knows your real-time energy costs and automatically adjusts the flow of electricity between your new solar battery, your solar panels, and the electric grid to help manage energy costs. You can save by shifting your electricity use outside of “event” periods or by staggering use of large electric appliances (like the dishwasher, washing machine, or pool pump) and electronics like video game systems that use a lot of energy, instead of using them all at the same time.
  • To enroll, call us today at 1-833-286-0859. First, we’ll help you confirm your eligibility. Then we’ll connect you with one of our battery installers, who will walk you through the program and help you sign up. Enrollment in this program is dependent upon customers meeting certain eligibility, permitting, and installation requirements. The program requirements, offers, and elements are subject to change at any time. The program may be canceled or put on hold at any time, including after participants sign up, are enrolled, or have technology installed.
