Con Edison Asks Customers In Some Brooklyn Neighborhoods To Conserve Energy

Con Edison is asking customers in some Brooklyn neighborhoods to conserve energy while company crews work to repair equipment problems. Con Edison has also reduced voltage by 5 percent in those neighborhoods as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are made.

The area includes these neighborhoods: Sheepshead Bay, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Midwood, Flatbush and East Flatbush.

That area is bounded by 18th Avenue and Ditmas Avenue on the north, Shore Boulevard and Shore Parkway on the south, Flatbush Avenue on the east and East 15th and 16th Streets on the west.

Company crews are working to repair the problems. Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, microwaves and, if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, until the equipment problems are resolved.

The voltage reduction also includes the neighborhoods of Midwood, Gravesend, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. But Con Edison is not issuing a special appeal for conservation in these neighborhoods.

Voltage reductions issued yesterday for portions of Queens and Staten Island are still in effect. In Queens the area includes these neighborhoods: Corona, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Estates, Oakland Gardens, Hollis Hills, Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok and Hillcrest. The area is bounded by the Long Island Expressway on the north, the Grand Central Parkway on the south, the Cross Island Parkway on the east and Queens Boulevard on the west.

The voltage reduction also includes East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, but Con Edison is not issuing a special appeal to customers in those neighborhoods to conserve.

On Staten Island the affected areas are West Brighton, Livingston, Port Richmond, Castleton Corners, Sunnyside, Mariners Harbor, Arlington, Bloomfield, Chelsea, Travis, Great Kills and Richmond Valley.

Another affected area on Staten Island includes New Brighton, St. George, Tompkinsville, Brighton Heights, Ward Hill, Stapleton, Grymes Hill, Clifton, Silver Lake, Rosebank, Ft. Wadsworth, Grasmere, Concord, Arrochar, South Beach, Ocean Breeze, Midland Beach, Grant City, New Dorp and Dongan Hills.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

The equipment problems in these neighborhoods have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system. Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants. The company is in constant communication with the New York City Office of Emergency Management.
