Con Edison Planner From Manhattan Wins Company's Top Honor
Model Employee Recognized for Excellence at Work, in the Community -- Tohma Gadson-Shaw, a humanitarian missionary and Con Edison operations planner, has added another accomplishment: she is a winner of the energy company’s highest honor, the “Living Our Values” award.
Gadson-Shaw, a Brooklyn native who lives in Harlem, was chosen for exemplifying the company's values of customer service, teamwork, excellence and helping the community.
Since joining Con Edison in November 2007, Gadson-Shaw has excelled at completing complex projects necessary to keep energy flowing to 3.4 million customers. When she’s not at work, Gadson-Shaw is active in charitable work with the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem.
“The greatest satisfaction in life comes from helping others,” Gadson-Shaw said. “My job at a customer-focused company like Con Edison gives me the opportunity to do that. Outside of work, I encounter people in my community every day who need help with basics like food or who just want to hear words of hope and encouragement.”
As a field operations planner in Con Edison’s Stores Operations department, Gadson-Shaw helps track and dispatch the enormous volume of cable, transformers, poles and other equipment it takes to provide reliable energy services to New York City and Westchester County.
No task has been too complicated for her. Just last year, she worked with a team to re-organize parking and the storage of heavy equipment at a Con Edison facility in College Point, Queens. The re-organization made it easier for trucks to get in and out of the lot and ensured that emergency vehicles could get through quickly.
Gadson-Shaw is a volunteer in her church’s “Feed the Community” and “Adopt a Block” programs. In “Adopt a Block,” volunteers set up tables in busy pedestrian areas and offer prayer, substance abuse counseling, nutritional information and other help.
She has also brought her compassion to other parts of the world. She was part of a group that visited Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa in 2008 to donate school supplies and clothes to two orphanages and help rebuild a library. Earlier this year, she went on a mission trip to Hyderabad and Rajahmundry, India to deliver toiletries and clothing and to minister to the needs of people in quarantine due to illness.
