NYCHA, Con Edison Team Up On Energy-Saving System at Bronx Development
Authority Uses Company's Incentive Money for Upgrade -- The New York City Housing Authority has taken advantage of incentives from Con Edison’s Green Team to install an energy-saving building management system at the East 180th St. - Monterey Avenue development in the Bronx.
The system, called a Wireless Energy Module and built by Intech21, ensures that the temperature in all 239 apartments is at the same comfortable level. Con Edison estimates that NYCHA will save more than 14,000 therms of natural gas the first year.
The system also gathers information on the electricity usage in each apartment. NYCHA will review that data and look for strategies to save electricity.
Con Edison provided NYCHA with a $42,400 incentive for the heating portion of the system. The incentive came from a Con Edison energy efficiency program that helps housing authorities make energy-saving upgrades.
“This latest Con Edison and NYCHA collaboration follows up on the success of a 2013 effort in which NYCHA was named Con Edison’s Multifamily Energy Efficiency Program Public Partner of the Year,” said Chris Haun, Acting Director of NYCHA’s Energy Finance and Sustainability Management Department. “Con Edison’s team has always been very helpful to NYCHA as we improve our energy operations.”
When assuming her leadership role as NYCHA Chair and CEO, Shola Olatoye stated that one of her objectives was to ensure a green and sustainable NYCHA. This is an example of how NYCHA and its partners can work together to green and retrofit NYCHA's existing buildings.
“The Housing Authority is showing its commitment to energy efficiency and to the comfort of its residents by investing in this modern building management system,” said Gregory Elcock, an energy efficiency program manager at Con Edison. “We hope that other residential property owners will follow suit and take advantage of our incentives to make upgrades that will save them energy and money.”
NYCHA installed this system at its Castle Hill development in the Bronx on a pilot basis in 2010 and found that it reduced heating fuel costs by more than 20 percent.
NYCHA plans to install the system at its Lexington, Saint Nicholas Avenue, Washington and WSUR (Brownstones) developments by the end of 2014. Con Edison’s incentives for the heating portion of the systems at those four developments will total $408,000. The five systems will save approximately 345,000 therms in the first year.
NYCHA is also installing high efficiency boilers at seven developments and will receive more than $740,000 in incentives from Con Edison. At each development NYCHA is replacing older, inefficient boilers.
