Smart Energy Plan – Billing Frequently Asked Questions

  • On the Smart Energy Plan, only your delivery costs will be billed differently. Your bill is made up of three parts:

    • Supply Con Edison buys the electricity you use from the companies that generate it and passes those costs on to you, without taking a profit—what Con Edison pays, you pay. Customers who receive their energy supply from an energy service company (ESCO) will continue to do so.
    • Delivery Your delivery charges are what you pay Con Edison to bring electricity to your home. On the Smart Energy Plan, they are calculated based on the days your home uses the most electricity during an hourly period. Delivery is the only portion of your bill that will change on the Smart Energy Plan.
    • Taxes Local, state, and federal taxes are applied to both the supply and delivery portions of your electric bill.
  • Delivery charges are based on the most energy that you use during an hourly period and are measured in kilowatts (kW). You will see your average peak and off-peak kilowatts on your bill, along with the corresponding delivery charges. Remember, delivery charges are higher during peak hours, and lower during off-peak hours.

    Your home’s kW consumption is recorded by your smart meter. Con Edison determines your highest daily demand (60-minute period) each day based on your highest use during peak hours and off-peak hours. The top 3 maximum daily demands that occurred during your billing cycle during peak hours and during off-peak hours are averaged to determine your billable demand for each period.

  • Kilowatts (kW) measure demand, which is based on the most energy you use during a 60-minute period. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure usage, which is the total amount of energy you use in a billing cycle.
  • Your Smart Energy Plan bill looks very similar to your old bill. The key difference is that your Smart Energy Plan bill displays your peak and off-peak delivery charges, which are measured in kW.
  • In the past, your old plan based your delivery charges solely on your total energy use during each billing cycle. The Smart Energy Plan bases your delivery charges on the days your home uses the most electricity during an hourly period. The Smart Energy Plan offers greater ability than before to manage your energy use and costs.

    Your delivery charges are what you pay Con Edison to bring energy to your home. On the Smart Energy Plan, your delivery charges will be higher during peak hours. During all other hours, your delivery charges are lower. With this knowledge, you can make changes that help you manage your energy usage.

  • As a customer enrolled on the Level Payment Plan, you can also enroll on the Smart Energy Plan. The Level Payment Plan is a budgeting plan to help you manage your annual energy payments, while the Smart Energy Plan is a new billing plan that changes the way you are billed for electric delivery and provides more opportunities to save on your costs.
  • For residential customers: The average residential customer uses about 2.3 kW during peak hours and 2.5 kW during off-peak hours during a typical 30-day billing cycle. Your home may use more or fewer kW than the average residential customer depending on how you use energy. Customers with air conditioners tend to use more kW during the summer.

    For small-businesses: The average small business customer uses 6 kW during peak hours and 5 kW during off-peak hours during a typical 30-day billing cycle. Your business may use more or fewer kW than the average small business customer depending on how you use energy. Customers with air conditioners tend to use more kW during the summer.
