4 Con Edison Employees From Northern N.J.Win Energy Industry Awards

They Are Among 24 Con Edison Employees to Win EPRI Awards

Four Con Edison employees from three northern New Jersey counties have won a prestigious energy industry award for their research.

The employees earned the Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute, or EPRI. That organization is dedicated to the safe, reliable delivery of power to customers.

The awards covered three projects:

  • Prakash Kothari, who lives in East Hanover, Maywood resident Hugh O’Neill, and Victor Gallo, who lives in Maplewood, were members of a team that confirmed the safety of smart electrical meters. The team found that radio frequency emission levels from electric smart meters were well within the safety standards set by the Federal Communications Commission and a European regulatory agency.

This project filled a need for information on smart meters in a dense urban environment. Con Edison is providing smart meters to its 3.5 million electric and 1.1 million gas customers. The meters let customers get more information about their usage and notify the company when a customer is out of service.
  • Kothari also won for another project. He helped the company establish ergonomic strategies that reduced injuries among workers.
  • Gurudatta Nadkarni, who lives in Millburn, led a study of the benefits of electrification in reducing carbon emissions.

The four are among 24 Con Edison employees who won Technology Transfer Awards this year. (A list of all Con Edison winners and their titles is below.)

“Seeing so many of our people recognized with this coveted award for such a wide range of projects is gratifying,” said Tim Cawley, the president of Con Edison. “It’s a tribute to the devotion our women and men have to providing safe, reliable service to our customers. They apply their talents and intellect every day to serve the residents and businesses in New York City and Westchester County that depend on us.”
