Con Edison and Food Banks Teaming to Provide Energy Efficient Lighting to Residents
Free Bulbs Will Cut Energy Usage for Customers
Con Edison is providing Food Banks in New York City and Westchester County with 200,000 high-efficiency lightbulbs for distribution to residential customers.
The light-emitting diode bulbs will save an estimated 7,100 megawatt hours of power per year. That would prevent more than 5,000 tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of taking 1,100 cars off the road.
Workers from Con Edison are gathering this morning at a Food Bank For New York City warehouse in the Bronx to help package bulbs. Each Food Bank will get 25,000 four-packs.
“This program fits nicely with the goal of the Food Banks, which is to help folks in need in New York City and Westchester County,” said Vicki Kuo, the director of Energy Efficiency for Con Edison. “The bulbs will help these Con Edison customers reduce their electric usage and save on their monthly bills.”
"We are grateful for this partnership with Con Edison,” said Francisco Tezen, vice president for Fundraising for Food Bank For New York City. “Promoting energy efficiency is vital to Food Bank For New York City's core mission of feeding New Yorkers in need. By enabling residents to save on their monthly energy bills, we can help ensure families can afford to put food on the table."
The Food Banks will work with affiliated organizations to distribute the packs to residential customers of Con Edison who meet income guidelines.
Con Edison is providing the bulbs as a pilot under its residential energy efficiency program. The company also has energy efficiency programs for multi-family and business customers. The company provides customers with incentives to make upgrades that will help them save energy and lower their bills.
