Con Edison Urges Customers in Part of Manhattan to Reduce Electricity Usage

Con Edison is urging all customers in a section of Manhattan to discontinue their use of non-essential electrical appliances and equipment until problems on electrical equipment are repaired.

The company has also reduced voltage by 5 percent in the area.

The affected area is bounded by East 31st Street to the north, East 14th Street to the south, 5th Avenue to the west and the East River to the east. The area includes the Madison Square, Gramercy and Flatiron neighborhoods and about 30,200 customers.

Con Edison has asked customers in the area not to use appliances such as washers, dryers and, unless needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, and other energy-intensive equipment. Also, turn off lights and televisions when not needed until the problems are resolved.

Customers should also avoid opening freezers to see if food is still frozen. Every time the freezer is opened, room-temperature air enters and speeds the thawing process. Most fully loaded freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 36 to 48 hours; half-full freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 24 hours.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

The equipment problems in area have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system. Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants.
