FDNY Power Washes Flatiron Buildings
Firefighters Provide Invaluable Assist to Con Edison Cleanup
City firefighters sprayed the facades of buildings along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan’s Flatiron area today to wash off asbestos left by Thursday morning’s rupture of a steam pipe.
Crews on the ground collected the water and filtered it before releasing it into catch basins. The catch basins were covered by fine mesh screens, providing a second filtering.

The work represented great progress in the cleanup following the steam pipe rupture at Fifth Avenue and 21st Street. Con Edison has been taking debris from the street and had a private contractor do some power washing of buildings on Friday.
The company has restored steam service to 16 of the 27 customers that lost service due to the rupture. Five buildings in the immediate vicinity of the rupture are without gas service.
Con Edison personnel will be at the Clinton School, 10 E. 15th St., again on Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents who cannot get back inside their homes because of the evacuation can meet with the company’s representatives for financial assistance.
