Ossining Resident Ricardo Velasquez Wins Con Edison's Highest Honor
His Work Helps Keep Service Reliable for 130,000 Manhattan Customers -- Ricardo Velasquez, an electric operations supervisor who lives in Ossining, has won Con Edison's highest honor, the “Living Our Values” award.
Velasquez, who has worked for the energy company for 47-years, was honored for exemplifying Con Edison’s values of exceptional customer service, operational excellence, and a relentless focus on safety. He and his crews are responsible for maintaining and improving Manhattan underground energy equipment that serves customers in the Washington Heights and Harlem sections of Manhattan.
"I always tell my colleagues and work crews to be careful and place the safety of the public and themselves first,” said Velasquez. “Always be aware of your surroundings and be polite and understanding when speaking with a customer."
He has worked in the field since he joined the company in 1969 and has never had an accident. Velasquez reminds his employees's each job is different, and to respect the power of electricity.
Velasquez was born in Honduras and migrated to New York City at the age of 14 with his grandmother. He said his bilingual ability allows him to better connect with Con Edison customers.
"Spanish speaking customers are put at ease and I feel a better sense of trust when I can speak to them in their native language," he said.
In his spare time, Ricardo enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and four grandchildren. He frequently participates in fundraising events for St. Theresa and Our Lady of the Wayside churches in Briarcliff Manor.
