Con Edison Sets New Gas/Electric Records -- The polar vortex swooping through much of the northern United States led to new one-day natural gas and electric usage records in Con Edison's service area.
Yesterday's (Tuesday's) sub-freezing chills set a new winter day gas usage record of 1,113,254 dekatherms (Dth). New one-day electric usage records for a winter day were also reached, with a peak of 9,063 megawatts (MW) at 6 p.m. and an all-day sendout of 185,572 megawatt hours (MWh).
The previous winter gas record occurred January 3, with a gas sendout of 1,016,292 Dth. For electric demand, the previous all-time winter demand peak was set on January 3, 2008 at 6 p.m. at 8,950 MW. The previous all-time electric winter sendout was 182,042 MWh on January 27, 2005.
