Floral Park Resident Plays it Safe to Earn Con Edison’s Highest Honor

A 27-year Con Edison veteran who dedicated himself to the safety of his fellow utility workers has earned Con Edison’s highest honor, the Living Our Values Award.

"John Biancaniello, a lead construction mechanic in Manhattan Electric Construction, conducted research into safety boots and gloves for Con Edison employees. He recommended a steel-toed, rubber knee boot and new fire-resistant gloves.

The boots protect crew members when they are working with heavy equipment and the gloves protect employees when they are pouring concrete, performing demolition work or electrical material. Con Edison tested the boots and gloves and approved them for employee use.

“I’ve made a lot of great friends in my years at Con Edison and I care deeply about their safety,” said Biancaniello, who lives in Floral Park, Queens. “It’s a great feeling to know that my work may help our dedicated men and women stay safe while they’re serving our customers.”

Biancaniello, who began his career with Con Edison right after high school, is one of six employees of Con Edison and Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc. to receive a 2014 Living Our Values Award. The award goes to employees who exemplify the company’s values of service, teamwork, excellence and community service.

People who know Biancaniello tell stories about his compassion, leadership and ability to communicate. On one occasion, Biancaniello was finishing work at the home of a 92-year-old woman who was worried that she would not make it to a doctor’s appointment because a contractor doing water work was blocking her street.

Biancaniello spoke to the contractor employees and convinced them of the urgency to clear the street. They did and the woman made it to her appointment.

Biacaniello exhibits his concern for others when he is on his own time, too.

He has served as a member the New York Police Department’s Queens precinct Explorer’s program. That program encourages at-risk youths to perform community service as a way to learn the value of helping others and hard work.

He also helps raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association NYC Chapter.

John is a devoted husband and father. He has two teenagers, Francesca and Jessica Biancaniello and two adult stepchildren, Eddie and Vanessa Vega. He is also a step-grandfather to Victoria Vega. He has been married to his wife Mary for eight years and they reside in Floral Park, Queens.

Biancaniello received his award at the annual LOV annual gala this week."
