Con Edison Statement RE: East Harlem Building Explosion
Con Edison continues to work with fire officials and emergency services personnel at the site of this morning’s building explosion between East 116th Street and East 117th Street along Park Avenue in East Harlem
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, and friends of the victims, to all who have been involved, and to all who are affected.
About 75 Con Edison personnel are on site. All electric and gas service has been shut down between East 116th and East 117th Streets on the west side of Park Avenue, as well as on the north side of East 116th Street near Park Avenue, as crews work closely with the FDNY to make the area safe and determine the exact cause of this morning’s explosion.
Con Edison was responding to a report of a gas odor at 1652 Park Avenue just before the explosion occurred. The call came at 9:13 a.m. from a resident who reported smelling gas inside the apartment at 1652 Park Avenue, but indicated the odor may have been coming from outside the building.
A Con Edison crew was dispatched at 9:15 a.m. and was en route to the scene when the explosion occurred at 9:31 a.m.
We will conduct a thorough investigation in conjunction with all appropriate agencies to determine the cause of this tragedy.
