U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2008 National Partnership for Environmental Priorities Program
The EPA recognized Con Edison in May 2008 for replacing oil filled lead cable with nonleaded, “green” cable and committing to removing all paper insulated lead-covered cable (PILC) from its electrical system by 2020. Con Edison has already replaced over 4,000 miles of PILC and plans to replace on average 120 miles of PILC with nonleaded solid dielectric cable annually to meet its 2020 commitment.
Carbon Disclosure Project: Top U.S. Utility for Climate Governance in 2007
Consolidated Edison, Inc. was recognized for its approach to addressing climate change and its transparent disclosure practices on the issue. The assessments are based on U.S. firms’ greenhouse gas emission trends and management programs, and the degree of disclosure to investors on risks and opportunities presented by the issue. Financial Times and Citi Private Bank: Greatest Improvement in Carbon Efficiency by Large Corporation in the Americas in 2007

The environmental award was given to Consolidated Edison, Inc. for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent between 2005 and 2006, amounting to 1.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent. An independent judging panel evaluated the competitive field of entries, worked with a technical advisor, and conducted independent research before making the winning selection. The award was based on the carbon efficiency of the company relative to its sector, both current and historical, and how the company had been assessing and preparing for future risks and opportunities as a consequence of climate change. Department of Energy (DOE): Recognition for Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Consolidated Edison, Inc. was recognized in 2006 for voluntarily providing their 2005 greenhouse gas emissions information to the Department of Energy. The purpose of DOE’s program is to serve as a powerful incentive for greenhouse gas emitters to make voluntary reductions.
U.S. Environmental Protections Agency (EPA): Natural Gas STAR 10 Year Partner
As one of the founding partners of EPA’s Natural Gas STAR Program, Consolidated Edison, Inc. was awarded in 2005 for 10 years of commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Natural Gas STAR Program is a voluntary partnership with companies that produce, process, transmit, and distribute natural gas to encourage adoption of cost-effective technologies and practices that improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions of methane. |
