FAQ: demand response

Q: What are demand-response programs?
A: Through demand-response programs, participating customers commit to reduce their electricity usage at critical times in order to help maintain reliable service. Participating customers receive financial incentives.

Q: Why should I participate in a demand-response program?
A: As a participant, you’ll help to maintain reliable electric service, while benefiting from financial incentives, and technology to help you manage your energy usage.

Q: What demand-response programs are available to Con Edison customers?
A: You can find a program to suit your desired level of participation at www.coned.com/dr.

Q: Are there any risks involved?
A: Some of the programs assess a financial penalty if you cannot reduce your electricity usage to the contracted level. However, there are demand-response programs that do not entail a financial penalty. You can find a demand-response program suited to your desired level of participation at www.coned.com/dr.

Q: Who decides when to call a power-reduction event?
A: A power-reduction event is called and a specific demand-response program is activated by either the New York State Independent Operator or Con Edison. An event may be called to ensure reliability of the energy-delivery systems, or when the demand for power exceeds available supply.

Q: What are some ways that customers can temporarily reduce their energy consumption?
A: Customers can reduce their energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lighting, appliances and equipment, raising the temperature of central air-conditioning systems, or using on-site generation that complies with state, city, and county regulations.

Q: How are participating customers notified of a power-reduction event?
A: Notification is given in advance of a power-reduction event by e-mail, text message, or telephone – whichever contact method a participant specifies upon program registration.

Q: What are load aggregators?
A: Load aggregators are organizations that advise and assist customers in participation in demand-response programs. Load aggregators are registered and listed with the New York Independent System Operator. For a listing of these aggregators click here.
