safety Con Edison is a leader among utility companies in the area of stray voltage detection and prevention. The company’s comprehensive program checks more than 750,000 pieces of electrical equipment each year. They include manholes, service box covers, transformer grates and city-owned streetlights. In 2009, we completed a five-year cycle in which we went inside 273,000 underground structures to check wiring and other equipment. The company found and eliminated 6,267 sources of stray voltage last year, the most since the program started in 2005. This was the result of increased system-wide surveys by the company. The result has been a dramatic reduction in the number of electric shock reports. Shocks were down for a fifth straight year in 2009, dropping 11 percent from 94 in 2008 to 84 last year. Since 2004, when there were 285 reported shocks, the number is down more than 70 percent. Con Edison has put the full weight of its engineering expertise and ingenuity behind the effort. The company’s Research and Development team developed mobile detection vehicles that roll along city streets scanning for stray voltage. The company also uses the mobile detectors before parades, festivals and other public events. Delivering electricity to the nation’s largest and busiest city carries some risks, but we remain relentless in investing in new technologies and procedures to do it as safely and reliably as possible.
