safety Con Edison is a leader among utility companies in stray voltage detection and prevention. The company's comprehensive program checks more than 740,000 pieces of electrical equipment each year. They include manholes, service box covers, transformer grates and city-owned streetlights. In 2010, we scanned more than 70,000 miles of city streets and found and made safe 4,717 pieces of equipment. More than 60 percent of the stray voltage conditions were due to failures on non-Con Edison equipment. Even when we find stray voltage that is not caused by our equipment, we immediately make the area safe. Our program has led to a dramatic reduction in the number of electric shock reports. Shocks were down for a sixth straight year, dropping 30 percent from 84 in 2009 to 59 last year. Since 2004, when there were 285 reported shocks, the number is down 79 percent. Con Edison has put the full weight of its engineering expertise and ingenuity behind the effort. The company’s Research and Development team developed mobile detection vehicles that roll along city streets scanning for stray voltage. The company also uses the mobile detectors before parades, festivals and other public events. Delivering electricity to the nation’s largest and busiest city carries some risks, but we remain relentless in investing in new technologies and procedures to do it as safely and reliably as possible. Anyone who suspects stray voltage should call 1-800-75-CONED. The company also recommends that people keep pets away from metal objects.
