Guidelines

Calendar
Con Edisonís corporate giving application process is open from March 1 to October 1. Requests for support are accepted at any time during this time period, and grants are made on a rotating basis.

Qualifications
Con Edison makes grants to tax-exempt nonprofit organizations as defined under Section 501 (c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Organizations must be nonsectarian and nondenominational to receive support. It is Con Edison's understanding that the institutions and projects it funds will promote diversity along with equal opportunity, and that programs will be open and accessible to all segments of society.

Practices
Con Edison awards grants for specific projects rather than for general operating support. Con Edison does not award grants for reducing debts or past operating deficits. Con Edison does not reduce or donate costs of gas and electric services.

Grant Renewals
Con Edison will rotate its support among organizations to assure a balanced approach in promoting its social investment. Grant renewals are not automatic and cannot be guaranteed from year to year.

Applicants for grant renewal will be required to furnish documentation that details how previous grants were used, and the value they yielded. Program effectiveness and demonstrated results will each be assessed when evaluating requests for future grants. Consideration of requests for multi-year or capital grants will be given strictly on a case-by-case basis.

Audits
Con Edison reserves the right to audit financial records of organizations that apply for, or receive, contributions from the company. By applying for a contribution, the applicant provides consent for Con Edison to conduct an audit as part of the application process and also after the grant has been made.

Exclusions
Con Edison does not award grants to:

  • Private foundations
  • Individuals
  • Labor groups
  • Organizations with programs operating principally outside Con Edison's service area
  • Media and literacy projects not connected to an institution or organization
  • Houses of worship, although requests will be considered from religion-affiliated organizations whose activities benefit the overall community and do not support any religious doctrine
  • Public schools
