CON EDISON CREWS RESTORING SERVICE IN AFTERMATH OF STORM
33 Percent of Customers Restored

NEW YORK – Con Edison crews today have been assessing damage, clearing roads and restoring service to customers affected by the unusual pre-Halloween snowstorm that hit the region this weekend.

More than 600 field personnel are on the job in Westchester County, the part of the Con Edison service area where the bulk of the outages occurred. Con Edison expects that number to grow to over 1,000 by tomorrow, as contractor and mutual aid crews from other utilities arrive.

Con Edison expects to have the vast majority of the New York City customers who were affected restored by late Monday. The vast majority of the Westchester County customers will be restored by late Wednesday.

The company has already restored power to approximately 38,000 – or 33 percent – of the approximately 115,000 customers who experienced service interruptions since the storm began Saturday afternoon. As of 4 p.m. today, approximately 77,500 customers were without electric service in New York City and Westchester County, about 71,000 of them in Westchester.  About 6,500 customers were without power in the Bronx and Staten Island.

In Westchester, the hardest-hit communities include Yonkers, Cortlandt, Greenburgh, New Castle, Mount Pleasant and Yorktown.

Crews give priority to restoring service lines that will provide power to the most customers as quickly as possible, then move on to restore smaller groups and individual customers who are without power.

Con Edison reminds customers to remain safe and avoid any downed power lines.

Customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status online by computer, cell phone, or PDAs at www.conEd.com. They may also call 1-800-75CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, have your Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether your neighbors have also lost power.

Con Edison offers the following safety tips:

  • If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by snow, tree limbs, leaves or water.
  • Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you're in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
  • If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored.  If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
  • Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios are in  working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries. Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.

In addition, the company is in close contact with the New York City Office of Emergency Management and the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services to coordinate storm-response if needed.
