WESTCHESTER RESIDENTS CASH IN ON OLD FRIDGES
1,500 Con Edison Customers Participate in
Refrigerator Recycling Program
NEW YORK – Con Edison’s customers now have an incentive and easy way to save up to $100 a year in electrical costs racked up by older, energy-wasting refrigerators. All they need to do is schedule a free pick up of their second refrigerator, and receive a $30 reward in return. Con Edison even recycles old refrigerators for free. The company has already paid out over $45,000 to New Yorkers who have signed up for the program.
Scarsdale resident Peter Hamra recently took advantage of the program and arranged for Con Edison’s Green Team to remove his 15-year old second refrigerator from his garage. Not only is Con Edison doing all of the work, he’ll have saved more than three times that much money in energy costs a year from now.
The program is part of the company’s commitment to help customers save on their electric bills while helping the environment. Older refrigerators can cost twice as much to run as newer, more efficient models.
“This is an easy way to instantly boost your home’s efficiency and save money. All you need to do is schedule a pick-up time,” said Cristina Coltro, manager for residential energy efficiency programs at Con Edison. “We are offering this program to help customers like Mr. Hamra save money and help our environment.”
“The refrigerator came with the house when we bought it 15 years ago. After we remodeled the kitchen, the old refrigerator found its new home in the garage. We used it for special occasions and overflow but it’s an energy hog so we would unplug it when it’s not in use,” said Hamra.
Con Edison residential electric customers in one-to-four family homes are eligible for the incentives. The company will remove regular-sized second, or extra, refrigerators, which are often kept in garages and basements, at no charge. Con Edison will arrange to safely dismantle and recycle the energy-guzzling appliance.
Con Edison customers will receive $30 for second refrigerators. The program covers the removal of up to two appliances per type per household. Appliances must be in working condition in order to be picked-up and recycled.
