April Is Dig Safely Month – Call 811 Before Digging
NEW YORK – Con Edison is reminding homeowners, contractors, and excavators that April is “Dig Safely” Month and to call 811 before digging.
In a typical neighborhood, a web of utility lines delivers energy silently under lawns, sidewalks, and driveways. When gardening or making home improvements, one wrong move could cause you or your neighbors to be cut off from electricity, gas, steam, heat, telephones, water, and other vital services.
Customers are encouraged to call the toll-free one-call center before starting any excavation or digging project. The easy-to-remember 811 call initiates a quick, cost-free service. Local 811 call-center personnel will notify participating affected utility companies that will dispatch crews to mark the location of their underground facilities.
Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. [NYSE: ED], one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenues and $34 billion in assets. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than three million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York.
