CON EDISON ENGINEER TO LEAD IEEE-USA ENERGY COMMITTEE

NEW YORK -- Con Edison announced today that Dr. Mayer Sasson, a company electrical engineer, has been named chair of the Energy Policy Committee of the prestigious IEEE-USA, a professional engineering society.

Sasson, who has worked for Con Edison since 1990, is a technical leader in Advanced Transmission and Distribution Design, Transmission Planning. He is responsible for transmission reliability issues.

“I’m pleased to serve as chairman of the Energy Policy Committee, particularly since the committee’s priorities include energy efficiency, ‘greening’ the electric supply, breaking addiction to oil by transforming transportation and enhancing the electrical infrastructure,” Sasson said. “At Con Edison, energy efficiency, fighting global warming and developing a smart grid are at the forefront of our mission.”

Sasson, who became a student member of IEEE in 1959, was named an IEEE Fellow in 1994 for his work on power systems analysis and real-time monitoring. In 2003, he was elected to be a Life Fellow. He served as vice chairman of the Energy Policy Committee since 2008.

Sasson studied electrical engineering at the University of the Andes, Bogotá, Colombia. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana. He has a doctorate from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London.

He has received numerous research awards, including the Colombia Excellence Award, which is given to natives of Colombia who have distinguished careers in the United States.

The mission of IEEE-USA - formally known as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-USA - is to recommend policies and implement programs intended to benefit the members, the profession and the U.S. public in professional areas of economic, ethical, legislative, social and technology policy concern.
