New Yorkers Eclipse Two Electric Records for this Summer

NEW YORK – Con Edison customers broke the 2009 peak-electricity demand record today for the third time this week and the fourth time in the last 11 days when the company delivered 12,242 megawatts (MW) at 3 p.m.

Today’s peak eclipsed yesterday’s peak by a total of 159 MW. It’s the 31st time in company history and only the second time this year that the 12,000 MW milestone has been surpassed since the first time it was crossed in 2001.

The company recommends that customers keep cool and save on energy costs by utilizing energy saving tips for homes and businesses that you can find online at www.conEd.com/thepowerofgreen. The site also links to other information about renewable energy and green power.

The Con Edison system delivers energy across a network of 92,000 miles of underground and 33,000 miles of overhead wires to approximately 9 million New York City and Westchester County residents. Throughout the current heat spell, the company continues to monitor its systems around the clock to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of electricity.
During this heat wave, the company continues to urge its 3.2 million customers in New York City and Westchester County to conserve electricity.  Simple conservation tips are available at www.conEd.com, including:

  • Turning off appliances when they are not needed;
  • Setting air conditioners at 78 degrees or higher;
  • Closing blinds or curtains to keep out sun light during the day.

The company urges customers to report power interruptions or service problems online at www.conEd.com, or by calling Con Edison’s toll-free customer service number 1-800-75-CON ED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number, if available, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.
Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. [NYSE: ED], one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $14 billion in annual revenues and $34 billion in assets.  The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York.
