CON EDISON CUSTOMERS SET JUNE PEAK-ELECTRIC RECORD AGAIN

New June Mark Two Days in a Row

NEW YORK – Con Edison customers set a June record for peak electric use for the second consecutive day on the fourth day of a heat wave, with the company delivering 12,987 megawatts at 5 p.m., surpassing the record of 12,684 megawatts set at 5 p.m. Monday. Tuesday’s high also ties the fourth-highest all-time peak electric use.

Overall electric consumption in Con Edison’s service area has grown by 20 percent over the past 10 years. The company also recently set a winter electricity delivery record of 14,732,319 megawatt hours from December through February.

The company has recently proposed 11 residential and commercial energy efficiency programs designed to achieve 378 megawatts of demand reduction.

Con Edison is continuing to closely monitor its system around the clock with additional employees mobilized for duty. Crews continue to work tirelessly through extreme weather conditions to ensure safe and reliable electricity delivery and to restore service as quickly as possible when outages occur.

The company continues to urge its 3.2 million customers in New York City and Westchester County to conserve electricity.  Tips include:

  • Turning off appliances when they are not needed;
  • Setting air conditioners at 78 degrees or higher;
  • Using energy-intensive appliances like dishwashers, washing machines and dryers late at night, or early in the morning.

Although Con Edison provides the most reliable electric service in the country, periodically outages will occur. Customers can view a Con Edison service area map to check for outages by going to www.coned.com/sm/outageinfo.asp.

The company urges customers to report power interruptions or service problems online at www.coned.com, or by calling Con Edison’s toll-free customer service number 1-800-75-CON ED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number, if available, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.
